    The Farm

In the Spring of 2017, MEC spruced up the school garden with the children. They planted corn, which they grew from seed, harvested, dried, shucked and sold as Popping Corn at our fall Manton Apple Festival. The children worked from seed to sale, this is one example of how we see our working farm. This Spring of 2019, we will be taking cuttings from heirloom apple orchards in our town. We will learn how to propagate apple trees, and will sell these at the 2019 Manton Apple Festival.

MEC envisions a working farm on campus that will eventually provide much of the school's nutrition, as well as offer vegetables to community members. We have now a flourishing garden, with plans for a chicken coup by the end of our first year. California State University, Chico Agriculture Department has agreed to work with us by providing interns to help work the farm and teach the children about sustainability.

On our beautiful 17 acre property, we have the Historic Manton School House which functions as a museum. We have agreements from CSU, Chico's Museum Studies department to send graduate students out to help us curate our collection.

Makerspace has agreed to work with the Manton Education Council to apply for funding to have a Makerspace Barn where children will be able to build, plan and apply classroom knowledge to real life problems.
